Security stuff

Nathan's space says it all.  Nathan was kind enough to notify us personally of what appeared to be a security issue in MSN Spaces.  Turns out that "security issue" is really just a layout bug that we are working to fix; but it is completely understable why Nathan and others freaked out initially.  I did too.  It looks bad.  But the great part about it?  Nathan didn't freak out publicly; he gave us a chance to investigate it.  Now that is being a great netizen.

No, I am not going to go into detail about the bug.  I don't want to focus on the negatives here!

Anyway, read the rest of Nathan's post for some insight into how powerful blogging for customer interaction can be.  The old ways are slowly giving way to a much more collaborative virtual society.  Ain't it all grand.

Quote

Security response, a blogger's tale

Blogging is not just about marketing and getting your message across, it creates a community of people who are passionate (one way or the other) about your product.  It allows customers to feel like that have an "inside source" with your organization that they know and are familiar with ... even though they've never actually met them, emailed, or spoken on the phone.  And you give your product team, who in the IT space is usually holed up in cubeland isolated from the customers, an outlet to reach out and communicate with the people they're really working for.  Bring these two together and the synergy is amazing - a "closed" issue before the tradition mechanisms of handling the problem have really begun to churn.

Mike, is this an issue with stats links? I'm seeing some wierd stuff going on and have tried to submit the concern/issue with customer support but have not heard back. The response may have disappeared into the Spam filter as I did recieve a support survey, just no response.

Mike,

If you ever need some good beta testers [for Mobile Spaces EN-US], don't hesitate to hit up the MSN Beta Butterfly team, we're terrific!

@Matthew

PS--What was up with "http://mail.microsoft.com/members/mike" in one of your comments below? Probably need a remember me feature, eh? hehe

Yup - he is a big grey guy. You can see pictures in the photo album. He was named after Kirby in the Eddie Murphy movie, Boomerang!

Cool blog.

How did you decide to name your cat Kirby?

I had a cat for like ten years as a kid that I named Kirby. That's such a great name.

How'd you choose it? Is it a fat dark grey cat?

HailStorm - the mobile UI is currently only available in Japanese. So while it is accessible (and in most cases usable) from the U.S. and elsewhere using existing phones, the text hasn't been localized and it hasn't been tested.

Scott is on vacation so I thought I'd punt it to you...I try to browse to my mobile space site on my Windows Mobile Smartphone (how long before Scoble does this too) to moblog, but it comes up JA-JP. Any idea as to why?

http://mobile.spaces.msn.com/members/pbj/ on my desktop does the same.

Thanks Matthew - although you got the wrong Mike this time :) MC is the one with the kid on Channel 9 - he is much more eloquent than I am! http://spaces.msn.com/members/emcee

We are working hard on performance/stability, trust me. And we are aware of the annoying comment bugs. As for the other stuff, you will just have to wait and see what we have up our sleeves!

Hehe. Thanks!

Oh, another suggestion, save the e-mail address/blog URL fields with the Passport please [or at least a cookie].

Hey Mike,

Great interview with Scoble I must say. And your child is so adorable! Anyway...

It's great that the issue wasn't a big security threat. So far the only problems I've had [and others reported MSN Beta] is slow service [maybe need to give SQL a little kick]. Actually if I were to include all of my problems, sometimes the comment form is inactive although I'm signed into my Passport [I leave it signed in most of the time], so I have to sign out AND refresh AND then back in. Also, when changing the layout, I noticed when I went to single [big] column and then back to dual/triple columns, all the modules still stayed in one column. Finally, I just submitted a comment on Nathan's blog and got a 404 then a this blog is restricted message [grr...]. Hopefully these v1 bugs will be worked out pronto! Also, where is the Messenger blogging/.NET Tab? Oh, and you guys should be advertising MessageCast's LiveMessage.

@Matthew
